CET counselling may be held at Hubli, Gulbarga
Bangalore: Here’s some good news for CET aspirants from Hubli and Gulbarga. If the state government has its way, students no longer need to come all the way to Bangalore for the counselling.
A proposal has been sent to start counselling centres in Hubli and Gulbarga to help students from these districts and surrounding areas.
Sources told TOI: “During counselling, students from lower income group find it difficult to book a hotel room as they are expensive in Bangalore. The room rates usually go up at the time of the counselling. Therefore, most of these students come directly to the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) and use the facilities there. If centres are opened in Hubli and Gulbarga, then those from nearby areas can go there directly.’’ They said the rush for the counselling will also be reduced.
Like the counselling in Bangalore, the students’ documents — marksheets, income certificates, caste certificates will be verified.
“Here is where the hitch lies. With instances of false income and caste certificates on rise during CET counselling, one has to train the officials to identify the genuine income and caste certificate. It’s important that these documents are properly scrutinized.’’ Two to three officials from KEA will be sent to these centers.
The remaining staff will be hired from the said districts and they will be trained to scrutinize documents. At least 25 persons would be required at the counselling centre, sources explained.
Sources also said that there is talk about providing CET coaching for students hailing from economic backward regions. “However, it’s at a nascent stages,” sources added.
Higher education minister Aravind Limbavalli said he is “open to the proposal’’ and will look into it at the KEA meeting, which will be held in November. Until then, students from the districts will have to keep their fingers crossed.
How will it work?
The computers in all the three centres will be inter-connected and students will be called for counselling according to their ranks.
For instance, a first rank student might be from Bangalore and second one from Hubli, the first rank student can select a seat from Bangalore. The moment the first ranked candidate selects his seat, it will be displayed simultaneously in computers in all the three centres. These centres will be set up in places with necessary access and other requirements like projectors, computers and big halls to accommodate the students. “The centres might be taken up in some college,’’ sources said.
